Do Not Call Registry

Congress approved money for the national registry, a way to block many unwanted telemarketing calls. Nearly 51 million home and cellular telephone numbers have been placed on the list since June. Consumer may register their phone numbers at 888-382-1222 or www.donotcall.gov. They must reregister after 5 years. Telemarketers who call listed people could be fined up to $11,000 per violation. Consumers will be able to file complaints at the above web site and phone number. The Federal Trade Commission requires telemarketers to check the list every three months. Calls from charities, pollsters, creditors, and on behalf of politicians are exempt.
